Remember to buckle up this summer!
Whether you’re a professional truck driver or driving through Maryland on vacation, it’s important to keep the state’s seat belt laws in mind. The laws are stricter than ever, especially in regards to child safety. According to the United States Department of Transportation, seat belt use in passenger vehicles saved an estimated 14,955 lives in 2017. Avoid expensive tickets and potential personal injury by following all Maryland seat belt rules.
Did you know that driving without a seatbelt is a primary offense in Maryland? That means that an officer can pull you over if you or your front seat passenger are not wearing belts properly. Buckling up doesn’t just ensure your safety; it reduces your chances of being pulled over and receiving a ticket. When buckling up, make sure that the shoulder harness is worn across the shoulder and chest with minimal slack. The lap belt should be adjusted so that it lies across your hips.
All passengers must wear a seat belt, no matter where they choose to sit. An officer can’t pull you over if a backseat passenger is not wearing a belt, but they can issue a citation for an unbelted passenger if they pull you over for another reason, such as speeding. Wherever you go this summer, make sure that each of your passengers is wearing a seat belt properly.
If you have a child younger than eight years old, Maryland car seat requirements will depend upon their height. Children taller than 4’9” are required to use a booster seat or car seat depending on their age. If you are using an older safety restraint, check the label to make sure that it’s federally approved. You may have to trade the booster seat or car seat in for a newer model.
